So crimes are tried in Federal Courts, whereas other crimes are tried in State Courts.

Determining where a crime is tried depends on whether the crime violated state or federal laws.  Typically crimes fall under the jurisdiction of Federal Courts include: smuggling controlled substances, internet crimes, large quantity narcotic conspiracy cases, bank robbery, bank fraud, pornography cases, mail fraud, theft from mail, bribery of public officials, interstate crimes and crimes committed on federal land.

State crimes are violations that fall under the local and state statutes or ordinances.  Some examples of state crimes include: murder, embezzlement, rape, child abuse, molestation, fraud, sex crimes, drug transportation, drug sales/distribution, domestic violence, assault and battery, robbery, theft, controlled substance possession, and DUI.
